Walls closing in on NYCHA bosses
More criminal charges could be coming for NYCHA bigwigs who have tried to paper over severe health and safety issues inside the city’s embattled public housing developments, according to Lynne Patton, a US Housing and Urban Development regional director.
“We’ve been working closely with the Southern District of New York, the US Attorney [Geoffrey] Berman,” Patton told John Catsimatidis on AM 970’s “Cats Roundtable” Sunday morning.
“He’s on a mission. He’s spent a lot of man-hours investigating NYCHA over the last three years. That investigation — the criminal part — is not over. People will not be getting away with the way they’ve been treating others.”
Three managers in the embattled authority’s elevators division were indicted in November on charges they falsified elevator inspections.
“We’ve already thrown three NYCHA managers [out],” Patton said.
Asked whether anyone should go to jail, Patton said, “I hope so. They need to.”
Former NYCHA Chairwoman Shola Olatoye resigned last year after admitting to falsely certifying lead-paint inspections in roughly 55,000 NYCHA units. She has not been criminally charged.
NYCHA and the Southern District of New York did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
