Everybody was a nobody at some point

-

SOME of what are designed to be the boldest on-air statements actually are among the most shallow.

For years, NFL analysts have told us that this or that player “should’ve made the Pro Bowl.” That’s easy to say — unless he gives the name of the player he’d remove to make room for his pick’s selection.

Same with golf, where we’re often told there’s a “strong” or “impressive leaderboard.”

Yet, at other times, when relative unknowns appear, who doesn’t belong on the leaderboard? Who didn’t earn or deserve his or her place?

Barely heard of him or her? Then ignore them, wish them ill. We want stars! Big names! But how do you become one? How many viewers said, “Who the heck is that?” when Brooks Koepka first appeared on a leaderboard?

➤ Friday morning’s Round 2 internet PGA Championship live coverage captured Dustin Johnson about to hit from the rough as playing partner Jon Rahm scrambled into the edge of the woods, where he was seen from behind, er, watering a tree.

Must be what they mean by “live streaming.”

➤ As Tiger Woods, nine back, was set to tee off Friday, TNT/CBS’ Peter Kostis provided his sage expertise:

“He has to be somewhat more aggressive, but be cautious where he chooses that aggressive route.”

That’s an example of saying anything when saying nothing would have better served him and us. Epidemic.

➤ Todd Zeile, from D.C. on Wednesday, revealed on SNY that his forefathers are forefathers: His mother is a descendant of second president John Adams, and his son, sixth president John Quincy Adams. My DNA? I’m 95 percent Eastern European, 5 percent Turkish Taffy.

➤ Reader Joe Donohue on Friday’s TNT/CBS’ second-round coverage of the PGA: “I’m glad the leader [Koepka] is in Tiger Woods’ group so we might have a chance to see him play, too.”

When Woods’ approach shot spun away from the hole Friday, CBS’ Jim Nantz audibly moaned.

➤ Reader Peter Berman: “I watched the movie ‘The Natural’ last night. Thank goodness they made it before sabermetrics and analytics or it would have been a 3 ½-hour movie instead of 2!”
