DeGrom won’t get pick of backstop

MIAMI — Personal catcher, personal smatcher.

Though Jacob deGrom has largely struggled with Wilson Ramos as his target this season, manager Mickey Callaway on Saturday indicated he won’t go out of his way to pair backup Tomas Nido with the disappointing Mets ace.

DeGrom on Friday allowed seven runs over five innings with Ramos behind the plate in a loss to the Marlins. He is 3-5 with a 3.98 ERA in nine starts overall.

“Things aren’t going well enough for anybody to demand their own catcher,” Callaway said before the Mets faced the Marlins. “And secondly, Ramos is our starting catcher most days so however it falls guys are expected to go out there and pitch the best they can and there is not going to be any excuses on who catches who.”

In five starts with Ramos as the catcher, deGrom has pitched to a 5.33 ERA. In three games with Nido behind the plate, deGrom has pitched to an 0.43 ERA.

Ramos arrived to the Mets on a two-year contract worth $19 million last offseason based largely on his offensive potential. But the veteran catcher entered play with a disappointing .640 OPS.

“Ramos will probably play two out of three or three out of four and then we’ll go from there,” Callaway said. “If you start allowing somebody to pick their own catcher, then Ramos is not going to start four days in a row and then Nido is going to catch deGrom. That is not something that is going to be helpful to our team.

“It’s better to throw to whoever is catching that day and just get it done.”

Jeff McNeil returned to the lineup, in the leadoff spot, after missing Friday’s start with abdominal tightness. McNeil had exited Thursday’s game in Washington with the discomfort, which he attributed to scar tissue from previous sports hernia surgeries.

Jason Vargas is scheduled to throw about 75 pitches in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday. It will be the lefthander’s first game action since leaving his start against the Brewers two weeks ago with a strained left hamstring. The Mets expect Vargas will need only one rehab start.

Paul Sewald was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to clear roster space for Steven Matz, who started Saturday against the Marlins.
