Blackout of ‘Thrones’ in China angers fans

Forget the Great War — the biggest disaster in the “Game of Thrones” finale may have been the US-China trade war.

Millions of Chinese fans of HBO’s epic fantasy series got blocked from watching the show’s hotly anticipated finale by Tencent Video — the streaming platform with the rights to broadcast it in China — which failed to air it, blaming “transmission medium problems.”

“We will notify you of another broadcasting time,” Tencent said on its Weibo social-media account an hour before the climax of Jon Snow’s story was slated to air early Monday, China time.

HBO, however, said in a statement that it experienced “no issue with content delivery.” In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a spokesman suggested that the finale was blocked due to escalating trade tensions between the US and China.

Asked by The Post why the Chinese government would block “Game of Thrones,” a spokesperson for HBO referred the question to a Tencent rep, who didn’t respond.

The blacked-out finale sparked outrage from legions of the series’ Chinese fans.

“All those paying members and their trust, and this is how you repay them,” one angry fan posted on Weibo.

“Is it the result of the trade war between the US and China?” another asked on the platform.

Tencent Video charges about $30 per year for access to all the shows on its platform.

It is not the first time that Tencent has outraged “Game of Thrones” fans during the series’ final season. Earlier this month, the internet giant heavily censored episodes of the show, removing scenes featuring sex and gore, in line with Beijing’s broader push to clean up content seen as vulgar or not in line with its socialist values.
