Aw, poor Chapo
Mex prez’s sympathy for the devil
What about some pity for his savagely tortured and murdered victims?
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador — saying he hates to see people suffer — expressed concern Thursday for Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is serving a life sentence in the United States.
“I really regret these cases. I don’t want to see anybody in jail . . . Nobody should suffer,” López Obrador said.
“It is also a thankless life to have a family and not be able to see them,” he added, noting that Guzman’s beautiful young wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, has been barred from visiting him at Colorado’s supermax prison.
“When all these things happen and result in a sentence like this, to be in prison for life, in a hostile, hard, inhuman prison, well, that touches you.”
He finally went on, “I also have in my thoughts many of the victims. It is very hard.”
Meanwhile, López Obrador said he will use legal channels to try to get the drug lord’s fortune returned to Mexico.
“I think that everything that is confiscated and has to do with Mexico must be returned to Mexico,” he said. “I think the US government is going to agree to turn over what belongs to Mexico.”
López Obrador said Mexico has erred in the past by letting the United States seize money in corruption and criminal cases against Mexican suspects, and pledged that it wouldn’t happen again.
US officials have estimated Guzman’s fortune at $14 billion, and a Brooklyn federal judge ordered him to pay $12.6 billion.
The issue is complicated because that is supposedly money his drug-trafficking organization made by distributing drugs in the US.
In the past, American officials haven’t said how they intend to get their hands on Guzman’s blood money.
