Ignoring a City Saint: McCray’s Statue Slight
THE ISSUE: Chirlane McCray’s decision to disregard suggestions to build a statue in honor of Mother Cabrini.
It is a disgrace that First Lady Chirlane McCray will decide who will be honored with a statue in New York City (“Team Blas’ Deaf Ears,” Editoral, Aug. 13).
Although Mother Francine Xavier Cabrini received the most votes in a poll, McCray ignored the voice of the people and appeared to make decisions based on race, rather than contributions.
Mayor de Blasio and his wife have no shame. New York City is rapidly changing and those of us who grew up in the city know very well that before de Blasio and McCray, it was a better place to live. Nicholas Maffei Bronxville
It has to be asked: Why is McCray making decisions for New York City ? Why is she deciding, through her “She Built NYC” project, which statues are to be created and placed on city property?
And why is she running a multimillion-dollar mental-health project when she has no relevant experience and credentials? She is a private citizen and needs to retire to private life. Nancy Brenner Manhattan
