Socialite in a Staten scam

IT’S the confounding case of the socialite’s Social Security number.

Page Six is told that curiously coutured uptown lady Jean Shafiroff was the victim of sartorial scammers who made off with $7,000 worth of designer clothing from Bergdorf Goodman — but the crooks were foiled by making a fatal error.

Apparently, the thieves stole Shaf iroff ’s Social Security number, called Bergdorf ’s and told the legendary department store that she needed to change her address from Park Avenue to a Staten Island, using the SSN to “prove” that they were indeed Shaf iroff herself.

Bergdorf ’s obediently made the change, then let the scammers charge the pricey duds to Shafiroff ’s house account and shipped them off to Staten Island.

Then the suspects tried the same routine on Saks Fifth Avenue — but they were rumbled in part because the Saks staff realized that Shafiroff wouldn’t willingly visit Staten Island, much less move there.

Bergdorf ’s paid for the fraudulent charges on Shafiroff ’s account, we’re told.

The philanthropist and soiree fixture told us that when she spoke to the Bergdorf ’s security head, he said that “he felt it was done by a professional group that steals identity information. He told me I would not be responsible for the purchases.” She added, “This has been very upsetting.” Shaf iroff is renowned on the cocktailparty circuit for her taste for ornate, overthe-top, Disney-princess gowns.

She has a particular fondness for bulbous Oscar de la Renta pieces.

Years ago, after we reported that her gown at a New York City Ballet gala “took up three seats on its own,” she told us, “Well, for an extravagant event, you must dress extravagantly.”

Both Saks and Bergdorf ’s declined to comment.
