With Friends Like These: The Saudis’ Bloody Record

-

I hate to be cynical, but no one was killed in the oil attack (“Rebs strike oil in drone attack,” Sept. 15). The Saudis will make a killing on the spike in oil prices, and all will go back to normal within a month’s time. Any retaliation against Iran would just be the icing on the Saudi cake.

If Saudi Arabia thinks this is cause for a confrontation with Iran, have at it. We sold the country enough weapons to make quite a ruckus.

Besides, our money is better spent on upgrading our crumbling infrastructure and improving our public education.

That our foreign and domestic policy, affecting the lives of hundreds of millions, originates from whatever room Trump tweets from in the White House is truly pathetic, and scary. Bob Bascelli Seaford

President Trump asserted that Saudi Arabia has been “a great ally” and that it has spent $400 billion here in recent years.

How has the kingdom been “a great ally”? It’s one of the most repressive regimes in the world with an atrocious humanrights record.

The Saudis, likely directed by Mohammad bin Salman, tortured and murdered a respected journalist and resident of the United States in order to silence him, and it has been a key player in the blackmail inflicted on us and our economy through the oil-producing cartel.

Have we come to have no regard whatsoever for human rights? Do we rely on the word of murderous dictators over our intelligence officials as official policy? If a country spends money here, do we wash away all of its sins and keep quiet? Oren Spiegler Peters Township, Pa. Over many decades, the United States has spent countless taxpayer dollars to support and protect the certifiably vile Saudi Arabian government.

We have provided military training and diplomatic support for a regime that has oppressed its citizens and allegedly murdered people who voiced opposition to them.

Now The Post is saying “Trump Must Teach Tehran” a lesson (Editorial, Sept. 17). Yes, Iran is the world’s biggest sponsor of terrorism and a threat to world peace, but isn’t it time for the gutless Saudi Arabian government to step up and retaliate against Iran, its mortal enemy? Gerard Rosenthal Manhattan

I find it to be more than just a coincidence that the attack on the Saudi oil plants occurred so soon after former National Security Adviser John Bolton left the Trump administration.

I’m sure that the attack was planned long ago but was never launched while that “warmonger” (Iranian word) Bolton still had some sway in the Oval Office. M. Klein New Hyde Park
