-

Felix Hernandez pitched 5 ¹/3 innings in likely his final start with the Mariners after 15 seasons — the man called King Felix walking off the mound probably for the last time with tears in his eyes — but the Athletics moved to the brink of clinching an AL wild-card berth with a 3-1 win Thursday night in Seattle. Oakland can clinch one of the two AL wild-card spots with a win or an Indians loss Friday. In Chicago, Indians rookie Aaron Civale gave up home runs on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning in an 8-0 loss to the White Sox that dropped Cleveland two games behind idle Tampa Bay for the second AL wild-card spot.

In San Diego, Clayton Kershaw shut down the Padres for six innings and Chris Taylor scored from first base on Max Muncy’s single in the sixth to lead the Dodgers to a 1-0 victory Thursday in San Diego. In Washington, Stephen Strasstruck out 10 in his final regularseason start and the Nationals held their lead in the NL wild-card chase, beating the Phillies 6-3 to sweep the five-game series. The Nationals remained one game ahead of the Brewers.

In Cincinnati, Orlando Arcia doubled with the bases loaded, and the Brewers closed on the NL Central lead, beating the Reds 5-3 for their seventh straight victory. Milwauee moved within one game of the idle Cardinals for the NL Central lead.

In Detroit, Jonathan Schoop hit Minnesota’s record 300th home run, Willians Astudillo also went deep and the AL Central champ Twins rallied past the Tigers 10-4 to move within a win of giving the major leagues four 100-win teams for the first time.
