Holding own in key states
President Trump remains highly competitive against his three likeliest Democratic challengers — Joe Biden, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders — in six crucial battleground states he won in 2016, new polls released Monday found.
Of the three Democratic hopefuls, only the former vice president holds an advantage over Trump in those states, albeit a slim one.
Biden leads Trump by 3 percentage points in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, 2 points in Florida, and 5 points in Arizona among registered voters, the New York Times Upshot/Siena College polls show.
The president tops Biden by 2 points in North Carolina, but the two are even in Michigan.
Except for Arizona, the numbers fall within the polls’ 4.4 percentage point margin of error.
The president and Sanders split the six swing states, with Trump winning Florida, North
Carolina and Arizona.
Trump fares best against Warren, who leads only in Arizona.
They are tied in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
An analysis by the Times and Siena suggested that Trump, who is the subject of an impeachment inquiry, retains an advantage in the Electoral College that propelled him to the White House despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.
It also said a Democratic contender would need to win at least three of those six battleground states to defeat Trump if other states’ vote totals unfold as they did in 2016.
As then, Trump’s strongest support comes from white working-class voters in those states.
He leads all three Democrats among that group.
But Biden, Sanders and Warren all lead him among black and Hispanic voters.
