Robinson OK with bench role

- By MARC BERMAN

Knicks center Mitchell Robinson became the Knicks fall guy in the starting lineup Sunday in an attempt to get Julius Randle off the schneid.

But the Knicks never looked worse, Randle didn’t play well, new starting center Bobby Portis couldn’t make a shot and Knicks coach David Fizdale is back to the drawing board.

“He wanted me to come off the bench,’’ Robinson said after the 113-92 Sacramento rout dropped the Knicks to 1-6. “He wanted to see how they’d do with them starting. So I’m going to support the decision. I’m still on the team. I’m going to come off the bench just as hard.”

The lineup change was done to space the floor better and put the 3-point shooting Portis alongside Randle up-front and bring the defensive-minded Robinson off the pine.

“Usually I stay in the dunker’s spot,’’ said Robinson, an alley-oop machine as a rookie. “I really don’t get into the corner. Bobby gets into the corner. It’s not the natural spot I run to. Me coming off the bench, I guess [Fizdale] sees a lot of spacing there. I can’t tell you that part. You got to ask him.’’

Fizdale said Robinson’s removal was not about his injuries, but Robinson is playing with two injured fingers and admits it’s tough to unleash jump shots. He has taken three this season, making one. That equals the total of jumpers he launched last season.

“I’m going to get to it,’’ Robinson said. “I’ve been cold a little bit with the finger. I’m going to get to it. Not going to risk.”

A second-team all-rookie stud last season, Robinson had already been playing with a dislocated finger on his right hand when he hurt his ring finger on his left hand in Boston on Friday. Robinson, 21, played with a splint on the finger Sunday but scored 10 points with two blocks and five rebounds in 24 minutes. He was plus-5 — the only plus on the team.
