Foreign desk: Boris Wave May Hit America
The “shock waves” from the massive win by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party are “being felt far beyond the United Kingdom,” notes The Washington Post’s Dan Balz. “The widening gap between urban and nonurban areas of Britain and the reshaping of the party coalitions” is “familiar in the United States in the era of President Trump.” And “the rout suffered by the Labour Party and its leader, Jeremy Corbyn” is “a clear warning of the limits of a left-wing agenda” — even if Corbyn was further left than any Democratic candidate. This by no means guarantees the US 2020 contest will come out the same way, but don’t dismiss Britain’s results as “of no relevance to politics here.”
