DRUNKEN, PANTLESS MAYOR

Oops, my bad: NJ pol

- By LEE BROWN

This pol got caught with his pants down.

A New Jersey mayor has apologized after getting so sloshed at a work party that he stripped off his trousers and passed out in a female employee’s bed.

Mahwah Mayor John Roth was exposed after an anonymous letter signed by “concerned employees of the township of Mahwah” began circulating last week, according to reports.

The Manhattan-raised pol (right), 71, admitted to NorthJersey.com on Wednesday that he had “too much to drink” at the party, which was attended by about two dozen town staffers at the employee’s house on Jan. 10.

“I did go upstairs to bed,” Roth, a Republican, told the site from his office in Mahwah Town Hall.

Asked if he took his pants off before getting into the employee’s bed, he said, “Yes, that’s true.”

The mayor’s wife, Andrea, came and picked him up after partygoers woke him, he said.

Roth said he apologized to the employee.

It was not immediately clear what, if any, ramifications there would be.

The township’s attorney, and Council President David May, declined to comment about the incident.

The employee, whom NorthJersey.com did not identify, also refused to comment. With the next mayoral election in November, Roth blamed his political foes for spreading the news of his boozy behavior.

“They’re leveraging it,” the mayor said.

Roth became mayor of the town of 26,000 in 2018, after his independent predecessor, Bill Laforet, was recalled by voters.

During his campaign, Roth told voters to elect him for his “proper moral compass.”

The efforts to recall Laforet were sparked by citizens furious that he had accused former Department of Public Works Director Ed Sinclair of having pornography on his computer in March 2015 — allegations based solely on an anonymous letter.

Sinclair died a few months later and his family filed a wrongfuldeath suit against Mahwah.
