Who’s that masked man?
Joe Biden donned a black mask and left home for the first time in two months Monday to lay a wreath at a veterans memorial near his home in Delaware.
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and his wife, Jill — both with their faces covered — laid a wreath of flowers and bowed their heads in silence at Delaware Memorial Bridge Veteran’s Memorial Park.
“Never forget the sacrifices that these men and women made. Never, ever forget,” Biden, wearing dark sunglasses, told reporters after the ceremony, adding “It feels good to be out of my house.”
His visit to the memorial was not announced and there was no crowd to greet him.
“I feel great to be out here,” he said.
When Biden arrived, he greeted a county official who was also wearing a mask.
The former veep, 77, also acknowledged a nearby group, shouting out: “Thank you for your service.”
Biden’s campaign said the former Delaware senator had attended Memorial Day ceremonies at the park in the past but Monday’s services were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
His 2020 campaign has been operating out of the basement of his home in Wilmington since his cancellation of a March 10 rally in Cleveland because of the outbreak.
Since then, he has appeared for occasional, sometimes gaffe-prone interviews on news programs, late-night talk shows and virtual campaign events via a television studio he had installed in his home.
It was during an interview from the basement this past Friday that Biden told radio host Charlamagne tha God that African Americans who can’t figure out whether to vote for him or President Trump “ain’t black.”
Trump has mocked Biden’s bunker arrangement.
“We have a sleepy guy in the basement of a house that the press is giving a free pass to, who doesn’t want to do debates because of COVID,” the president said in April.
The political rivals traded jabs over the weekend.
Biden called out Trump for golfing at his Virginia resort amid the pandemic.
“Nearly 100,000 lives have been lost, and tens of millions are out of work. Meanwhile, the president spent his day golfing,” Biden tweeted Sunday.
Also on Sunday, the president questioned Biden’s mental capacity during an interview with Sinclair Broadcasting, saying, “I don’t think he remembers what he did yesterday.”
Trump spent Memorial Day laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery with First Lady Melania Trump. He also spoke at a ceremony at Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore.
