‘WE’LL VANQUISH’ Cuo & Blas cite heroes past and present

Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio took time amid the pandemic to honor America’s fallen military heroes on a particularly somber Memorial Day.

“Today we honor the service members who have lost their lives,” said Cuomo, whose coronavirus press briefing at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum began with his tossing a wreath in the Hudson River, the playing of taps and a moment of silence.

“We remember their families and the pain that they’ve dealt with,” continued Cuomo. “We thank them all for their service, their bravery and their sacrifice.”

In his remarks, Cuomo drew repeated parallels between the nation’s wartime heroes and frontline workers lost battling the coronavirus — both in their selflessness and ensuring that government care for the families they leave behind.

He also paid tribute to veterans among the tens of thousands of New Yorkers so far lost to the disease.

De Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray, meanwhile, observed a solemn moment of silence Monday morning at the Brooklyn War Memorial at Cadman Plaza, adorned with flags and red, white and blue floral wreaths.

The mayor tweeted a series of photos from the ceremony, among them one of himself and McCray standing before the wreaths, heads bowed in respectful contemplation — and faces masked.

“It’s a different kind of Memorial Day in New York City this year,” wrote de Blasio. “But our appreciation for the heroes who gave their lives for our country has never been stronger.”
