B’klyn Revel tragedy
A promising young TV reporter was killed when her pal slammed the brakes on a Revel scooter they were riding and sent them both tumbling into the street, according to police.
Nina Kapur, 26, who worked for CBS New York, was in the passenger seat of the scooter at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the driver, also 26, applied the front brake at Franklin Street and India streets in Greenpoint, police said.
After the hard brake, both Kapur and the unidentified driver were thrown from the bike. They were both rushed to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where Kapur was pronounced dead.
The driver told authorities he believed a car was pulling out of a spot and he was trying to avoid it, police sources said.
Neither Kapur, who was originally from Newton, Pa., nor the driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, according to the sources.
The driver, whose relationship to Kapur was not known, suffered minor injuries, police sources said.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Revel offered condolences to Kapur’s friends and family, and said it was investigating the crash.
“Revel extends deepest sympathies to Nina Kapur’s family and loved ones for their loss. We are aware of reports that she passed away after an accident involving a Revel electric moped,” the spokesperson said.
“We are actively investigating this incident, and we are in contact with the NYPD to aid their investigations in any way we can,” the spokesperson added.
The company requires riders to wear helmets, have a valid driver’s license and follow local traffic laws.
After news of the crash spread, CBS New York and Kapur’s colleagues mourned her death on social media.
“We are heartbroken over the loss of our colleague and friend, Nina Kapur. Nina passed away over the weekend. She was known for her contagious smile and love for story-telling. Our thoughts are with Nina’s family,” the station said in a tweet.
“I am in shock,” Allie Berube, a sports reporter for a local ABC station in Harrisburg, Pa., wrote in a tweet.
“Nina Kapur was such a hardworking journalist and a kind person to everyone in school & in the newsroom. We lost a great one this weekend. Wow.”
