Losing is new for vet Logan

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Logan Ryan is accustomed to winning, so this losing is new to him, an unwelcome addition to his NFL existence. He is doing everything he can to brush away the negativity of the Giants’ 0-2 start and find a way to reconnect with what he knows best.

In four years with the Patriots, Ryan went 12-4, 12-4, 12-4 and 14-2. He spent three seasons with the Titans, and they went 9-7 all three years. In his seven NFL seasons, Ryan made the playoffs six times. The veteran defensive back signed with the Giants nine days before this season started, and just like that he is on the losing end of things.

“I don’t know if I’ve been 0-2 before, but I was 2-4 last year and was in the AFC Championship,’’ Ryan said. “So, I do know something: If you have a strong locker room, if you have strong leaders, if you have guys that love to play ball and love to practice hard, you can dig yourself out of some holes here. [Starting] 0-2 is horrible, but I think we’re a game out of the division here. It’s not like our division is world beaters at the moment. We’re a game out from being a division leader. It’s football. You have to keep playing the games. You have to get over the tough losses.’’

There was plenty of sarcasm flowing after these comments spun through the Twitter turnstile. The Giants have not been part of the NFC East hierarchy for five years, and though the Cowboys and Washington are 1-1 and the Eagles also are 0-2, there is no conversation linking the Giants to any division race.

Ryan, 29, can be forgiven for taking a glass-half-full view, given his NFL pedigree on winning teams. His expectations tilt toward positive results.

“There are years where the team doesn’t start off so well and they pack it in, and some teams keep fighting and stick together,’’ Ryan said. “It’s a long year. For us, I don’t think we have guys that are packing it in. Guys are just coming out, they’re doing a little bit more individually to help the collective effort.’’
