Death for kid-poison teach
A female kindergarten teacher in China has been sentenced to death for poisoning 25 children — including one who died — with breakfast porridge laced with sodium nitrite, according to news reports.
Wang Yun is “despicable and vicious” for intentionally sickening the students in the class of a teacher she had fought with, the Intermediate People’s Court in Jiaozuo said on Monday, the state-run Global Times reported.
The March 27, 2019, poisoning was deemed an act of “revenge” against Wang’s colleague after the two had argued over “student-management issues.”
The court also found that Wang knew the sodium nitrite would be harmful but acted “with no regard for the consequences.”
In 2017, she had used it to spike her husband’s tea after an argument, the court noted.
He survived after suffering a minor illness.
Wang’s “criminal methods and circumstances were exceedingly bad with especially severe circumstances, and she should be severely punished in accordance with the law,” said the sentencing statement from the court in the central province of Henan.
After eating the porridge, many children threw up and fainted, parents told the Global Times.
One boy died after spending 10 months in the hospital, the BBC reported.
Sodium nitrite, which is often used as a food additive for curing meat, is a highly toxic substance also found in fertilizers, munitions and explosives. In large amounts, it can prevent the body from properly absorbing oxygen.
Wang is expected to die by lethal injection or firing squad.
