Yanks trio set to play winter ball

- By DAN MARTIN

Three Yankees who had three dreadful 2020 seasons — for very different reasons — could be looking to get back on track with the same team in the Dominican Winter League.

Miguel Andujar is set to report to Toros Del Este this week according to ESPN Deportes, while Gary Sanchez and Domingo German are also expected to play for the team in the Dominican Republic, according to other reports out of the Dominican.

All three are coming off seasons to forget, with Andujar shuttling between The Bronx and the Yankees’ alternate site, Sanchez playing himself out of the starting catcher spot in the postseason and German serving a suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence protocols in 2019.

Their roles with the Yankees are in doubt going forward.

Andujar, 25, never adjusted to the part-time role he was relegated to when he lost his starting job at third base to Gio Urshela. He struggled at the plate and in the field, but hit well in his final six games of the regular season in mid-September.

Sanchez, who turns 28 in December, started just two games in the playoffs after he hit .147 and struck out 64 times in 178 plate appearances during the regular season. Kyle Higashioka supplanted Sanchez as the starting catcher in the postseason.

General manager Brian Cashman acknowledged Sanchez’s future was unclear earlier this month.

“It’s certainly a fair question, the way Gary Sanchez’s season transpired and the way it ended with [Kyle Higashioka] actually starting in the postseason as many games as he did,’’ Cashman said of the Yankees’ catching situation. “It’s one of the discussion points we’re gonna have to focus on.”

German would figure to be in line for a spot in the rotation in spring training, but team owner Hal Steinbrenner told “The Michael Kay Show” recently that he would “absolutely have to be comfortable with the fact that [German has] turned his life around” before the Yankees considered letting him pitch for them again.
