Wisconsin recount affirms Joe as big cheese

The recount of ballots in two Wisconsin counties wrapped Sunday, but did not put a dent in President-elect Joe Biden’s 21,000-vote lead in the state.

Dane County completed its recount Saturday night and the Board of Canvassers certified the results on Sunday.

Biden lost 91 votes, and Trump’s total shrank by 46 votes, according to the Madison, Wis., CBS affiliate.

On Friday, Milwaukee County finished recounting its 450,000 votes and found Biden got an additional 132 votes.

Trump paid for the $3 million recount in the two counties, as laid out by state law.

Wisconsin must certify its vote on Dec. 1, but the Trump campaign vowed to continue challenging the recount results in both counties, saying there were “serious issues” when people cast their ballots.

“The recounts in Dane and Milwaukee counties have revealed serious issues regarding the legality of ballots cast,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Jenna Ellis said. “As we have said from the very beginning, we want every legal vote, and only legal votes, to be counted, and we will continue to uphold our promise to the American people to fight for a free and fair election.”

Biden’s camp said the recount proved he was the winner.

“The recount only served to reaffirm Joe Biden’s victory in Wisconsin,” Danielle Melfi, Biden’s state campaign chief, said.

She claimed the canvassers “resoundingly rejected — often on a bipartisan basis — the Trump campaign’s baseless attempts to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites who simply followed the law when they voted.”
