Pitino earns 1st win as Gaels coach

Isaiah Ross had a career-high 33 points as Iona beat Hofstra 82-74 on Saturday in Hempstead, giving new Gaels coach Rick Pitino his first college victory since his firing from Louisville in October 2017.

Nelly Junior Joseph had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Iona (1-1). Dylan van Eyck added 14 points. Berrick Jean Louis had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Tareq Coburn scored a career-high 28 points for the Pride (1-2). Isaac Kante added 17 points. Jalen Ray had 15 points.

Kansas 65, North Dakota State 61

In Lawrence, Kan., Tyon GrantFoste­r drove for the go-ahead basket with just over a minute to go, then swatted away Sam Griesel’s layup with 10 seconds left, helping seventh-ranked Kansas (4-1) escape 0-4 North Dakota State.

Houston 77, South Carolina 67

In Houston, Quentin Grimes had 23 points and seven rebounds, Tramon Mark added 18 points and the No. 10 Cougars (4-0) rallied past South Carolina (1-2).

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson and his son, assistant coach Kellen Sampson, missed the game because of COVID-19 and contact tracing protocols. Assistant coach Quannas White served as Houston’s coach.

Providence 79, Fairleigh Dickinson 67

In Providence, R.I., David Duke had 28 points and Nate Watson added 20 points as Providence (3-2) topped Fairleigh Dickinson (0-4).

Syracuse 87, Rider 52

Alan Griffin and Joseph Girard III combined for 44 points, Syracuse rained 15 3-point shots and the Orange (3-0) beat Rider (0-1) in an empty Carrier Dome.

Oklahoma State 84, Oakland 71

In Stillwater, Okla., Cade Cunningham had 18 points and a career-high eight assists, and Oklahoma State pulled away midway through the second half to beat Oakland.

Marist 68, Binghamton 65, OT

In Vestal, N.Y., Michael Cubbage scored 18 points and Marist edged Binghamton in overtime in the season opener for both teams.
