Not this time, Andrew!
IN 2013, after a number of corruption scandals in Albany, Gov. Cuomo established a Moreland Commission to root out malfeasance.
That is, until the commission issued a subpoena to one of the media-buying firms the governor himself used. Cuomo made a call, and the subpoena was withdrawn. He closed the commission soon after because it dared to investigate him.
Cuomo is terrified of inquiries he cannot control. His first reaction to former aide Charlotte Bennett’s credible claims of sexual harassment was to appoint his own investigator, Beth Garvey. Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats pointed out that that wasn’t how an “independent” investigation worked, and said Attorney General Letitia James should appoint the person.
OK, said Cuomo’s office . . . except she should pick this person in consultation with state appeals Judge Janet DiFiore, a Cuomo appointee.
Only after yet another outcry did he back down from that demand.
Cuomo is just as shameful as he’s always been. He saw the results of the last time James probed his office — she officially blew the whistle on how the state covered up the true count of COVID deaths in nursing homes. Cuomo can’t let that happen again. He’s looking for any weaselly way to influence or torpedo oversight.
A truly independent investigation is the only way New Yorkers will get the answers they deserve. Cuomo does not get to dictate one detail of what happens now. He’s gotten away with covering things up too many times. It cannot happen now.
