NHL: Devils fall to Caps in OT

Jakub Vrana scored his second goal of the game in overtime to help the visiting Capitals beat the Devils 5-4 Tuesday night after New Jersey rallied to score three consecutiv­e goals in the third period to force OT.

The Devils got goals from Miles Wood, Yegor Sharangovi­ch in the third period and Damon Severson scored with 7:40 left in regulation to tie the game at 4-all.

Blake Coleman scored 2:17 into overtime, giving the Lightning a 4-3 win over the Red Wings in Detroit and extend the defending Stanley Cup champions’ season-high point streak to nine games.

Jordan Staal scored his second goal of the game with 34.9 seconds left in overtime to give Carolina a 3-2 win over the Predators in Raleigh, N.C. and extend the Hurricanes’ winning streak to six games.

In Toronto, Connor Hellebuyck made 36 saves, leading the Jets to a 4-3 win over the North Division-leading Maple Leafs in the opener of a three-game series.

In Columbus, Ohio, Patric Hornqvist and Owen Tippett scored power-play goals in the second period, and the Panthers beat the Blue Jackets 4-2.

In Philadelph­ia, Sean Couturier and Nolan Patrick each scored in a shootout and the Flyers rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Sabres 5-4. The Sabres have now dropped eight games in a row.

NFL: Raiders trade Brown to Patriots

The Raiders agreed to deal tackle Trent Brown to New England. Brown will rework his contract, which had two nonguarant­eed years for $29.25 million remaining, to an $11 million, one-year deal, a person familiar with the trade told the Associated Press.

The Buccaneers agreed to terms with Lavonte David on a two-year deal worth $25 million, with $20 million guaranteed, according to ESPN, keeping one of the league’s premier inside linebacker­s from hitting free agency.

The Titans released cornerback Malcolm Butler three years into the five-year deal he signed in March 2018, according to his agent Derek Simpson. Butler, a seven-year veteran, signed for more than $60 million after leaving New England as a free agent.

The Saints have placed the franchise tag on 24-year-old free safety Marcus Williams, general manager Mickey Loomis announced. Williams has intercepte­d 13 passes in four NFL seasons.

ETC: Heat respond to Leonard slur

The Heat said that Meyers Leonard will be away from the team indefinite­ly, sharply criticizin­g his use of an anti-Semitic slur while playing a video game that was being livestream­ed.

Leonard apologized for using the term, insisting he did not know what it meant when he used it Monday. The team also said it will cooperate with the NBA’s investigat­ion.

NBA stars Chris Bosh and Paul Pierce, WNBA great Lauren Jackson and Villanova coach Jay Wright are among the 14 finalists announced Tuesday for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021.

Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez and slugger Franmil Reyes rejoined their teammates at training camp after being banned for breaking COVID-19 protocols. The players had tested negative for the coronaviru­s.
