Frazier ‘fine’ after wall scare

- By DAN MARTIN

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Yankees got a scare on Tuesday when Clint Frazier slammed into the left-field wall going after a homer by the Tigers’ Willi Castro in the bottom of the fourth inning at Joker Marchant Stadium.

After a brief visit from the training staff and manager Aaron Boone, Frazier remained in the game and made a catch later in the inning. Frazier struck out swinging on a full count the next inning, but was replaced in the bottom of the fifth.

“He came out fine,’’ Boone said. “He was very clear-eyed and said he was fine. He said, ‘I know what it feels like when I hit the wall [with my head] and this was nothing like that.’ ”

Boone opted to take Frazier out following the next at-bat because he didn’t want to keep him in until the seventh to get one more plate appearance.

The manager added Frazier “checked out” with the training staff before leaving the park.

The crash got the attention of Aaron Hicks, who was playing center and was the first to check on Frazier.

“He hit the wall pretty well right there,’’ Hicks said. “He seemed like he was doing OK. Hopefully that continues.”

Hicks added he “saw a lot of contact [with the wall]. I didn’t notice if he hit his head or his neck.”

The 26-year-old Frazier dealt with concussion symptoms after running into a wall covered by a chain link fence while playing left field against the Pirates in Bradenton, Fla., just over three years ago.

Frazier ended up being affected by symptoms all the way into the 2019 season before finally feeling right again last season, when he developed into one of the Yankees’ top offensive threats — and improved so much defensively that he was named a Gold Glove finalist.

Prior to this spring training, both Boone and general manager Brian Cashman said Frazier was the starting left fielder.

Tuesday, Frazier was replaced in the bottom of the fifth, as was Hicks.

“I ran over to see how he was feeling,’’ said Hicks, who suffered a concussion in 2014 while with the Twins. “I’ve been a guy that’s had a concussion, and it took a while to be [comfortable] around the wall again.”

Frazier has dealt with that issue since the injury, and he took his time getting to his feet after being checked out.

“He just felt like he needed some time,’’ Hicks said. “It’s perfectly understandable, especially during the game. You want to get back to your position, but it might not be the best decision. I told him to take his time.”
