DC beat: Liberals vs. Hope for the Capital’s Kids

- — Compiled by The Post Editorial Board

“Washington’s so-called liberals are planning to strip away life-changing scholarships from low-income minority children in” Washington, Lindsey Burke and Virginia Walden Ford warn at The Hill. The House committee that oversees DC spending is moving to cease funding for the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, which offers low-income families scholarships for “safe and effective private schools.” Hope the Senate balks; at stake are “the futures of thousands of children,” since “access to the program significantly increases students’ likelihood of graduating high school.” In the vast federal budget, the “program’s cost is couch-cushion change” — and it’s far less per student than DC’s public schools spend. “But school safety, improved academic attainment, happier students and parents and massive savings appear to be less persuasive to the Biden administration than the teachers’ unions and their deep pockets.”
