No slugfest in Seattle

- By GREG PETERSON

The A’s had a rare Wednesday off in preparation to play a four-game series in Seattle and will look to get the series off to a good start with Sean Manaea pitching against the Mariners on Thursday.

The 6-6 record does not speak to how Manaea has pitched this season, as he has a 3.20 road ERA in eight starts with four home runs allowed. In 45 innings, he has registered 10 strikeouts and 2.6 walks per nine innings.

The Mariners will look to Chris Flexen to continue his home dominance. The ex-Met has allowed one or zero runs in eight of his 10 home starts with the Mariners going 8-2. Seattle backs him up with a lineup that ranks last in MLB in batting average, while Oakland has allowed four runs or fewer in 10 straight games.

With the Mariners having scored four runs or fewer in seven of their past eight home games, and with five of Flexen’s past six starts in Seattle having gone under the total, runs will be hard to come by in Seattle on Thursday.

THE PLAY: Athletics Mariners total, Under 8 runs.
