MLB: Red Sox defeat Blue Jays

J.D. Martinez and Hunter Renfroe connected on back-to-back home runs as the Red Sox beat Toronto 7-4 in the Blue Jays’ final game at their temporary Buffalo home. The Blue Jays will return to Toronto on July 30.

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run homer for his 29th of the season as the Padres defeated the Braves 3-2 in the first game of a doublehead­er in Atlanta. The second game was suspended due to inclement weather with the Padres leading the Braves 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ernie Clement had a season-high three RBI’s to lift the Indians to a 5-4 win over the Astros in Houston.

In St. Petersburg, Fla., Austin Meadows hit a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning and the Rays rallied past the Orioles 5-4.

In Washington, pinch-hitter Jorge Alfaro drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning double and the Marlins beat the Nationals 3-1.

In Los Angeles, former Met Wilmer Flores hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning to lead the Giants to a 4-2 win over the Dodgers.

Yermín Mercedes, the surprising rookie who helped carry the White Sox with his booming bat early in the season and got sent to the minors following a prolonged slump, said on his Instagram that he is stepping away from baseball.
