Hill set for Citi debut on Sunday

- By MARK W. SANCHEZ

For the first time since 2015, when he was a Long Island Duck, Rich Hill will start for a New York team.

The lefty will make his Mets debut Sunday, Luis Rojas said Saturday, after the veteran joined the team and talked with the staff.

“He came in and threw, felt great,” the manager said after the Mets’ 10-3 loss to the Blue Jays at Citi Field. “He’s very excited to be here.”

Hill comes as much-needed depth for a team that already was needy before David Peterson was moved to the 60-day injured list with a foot fracture.

The 41-year-old last pitched Sunday, with the Rays, and had another middling effort (three runs in four innings in Atlanta). In an up-and-down 17th bigleague season, he has struggled since June and his spin rates, especially on his curveball, have dropped since Major League Baseball’s crackdown on sticky substances.

He did not cost much — an injured Tommy Hunter and minor league catcher Matt Dyer went to the Rays — and the Mets will hope they can see a version of Hill closer to his May edition, when he posted a 0.78 ERA in six starts.

Hill has reinvented himself before, famously pitching his way out of affiliated baseball and back, needing a two-start stint with the Independent Long Island Ducks in 2015.

➤ The Mets were busy Saturday, when they called up infielder Brandon Drury, optioned righty Nick Tropeano and placed righty Stephen Nogosek on the 10-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.

Drury, who pinch-hit a double, represents more insurance for Jeff McNeil, who was out of the lineup for a second straight game with a left leg issue.

McNeil ran before the game, but “he still feels a little fatigue,” said Rojas, who did not feel McNeil is an IL candidate. Yet, McNeil was unavailable again.

“We’re still hesitant with him going out there and then just ... compensating something,” said Rojas, wary of McNeil turning a bother into an injury, as his cramped-up leg became a hamstring strain in May.
