American Carissa Moore (left) and Brazilian Italo Ferreira became the first women’s and men’s surfing gold medal winners in the sport’s inaugural Olympic appearance. The 28-yearold Moore, the only native Hawaiian competing in the event, described it as “a crazy couple of days.” Ferreira, meanwhile, soared through the air to win his final despite breaking his board during the heat.
