‘Root Causes’ Ignored

-

Why hasn’t Vice President Kamala Harris visited Port-au-Prince? She insisted that you need to examine the “root causes” in order to handle the border crisis. Well, in the past few months, Haiti’s president was assassinated and the island nation was hit by an earthquake and a hurricane. Those are some root causes.

But Harris didn’t visit Haiti, and President Biden’s administration barely reacted to the unrest — sending USAID to offer some nominal assistance.

The Biden administration did nothing to make Haiti a more stable place to live, and through words and action sent the message that the US border is wide open.

After all, US Customs and Border Protection says it has encountered 1,002,722 unique individuals crossing the border — illegally or asking for asylum — just in the first eight months of this year. Tens or hundreds of thousands more surely enter without being caught.

The Haitians saw that Guatemalans and Hondurans and Ecuadorians were being waved right in — why not them?

So is it any surprise then that 10,000 desperate migrants, mostly Haitian, are huddled under a bridge in Texas? That untold thousands more are coming?

In fact, some 61,000 of those caught at the border (more than a quarter of the total) hail from neither those Northern Triangle nations nor Mexico, though many of the Haitian migrants had been living there.

Why isn’t Harris at the border to clear up the mess that this policy has created? Why doesn’t Biden skip just one weekend at his beach house to witness the humanitarian emergency he has created?

He won’t. Why? Biden is more worried about optics than assistance. He’s banning Fox News drones when he should be sending in FEMA.

Americans have heart, but they are also realists. We need to have a process for accepting immigrants, not hang out a “We’re open” sign, so that unsafe, unsanitary tent cities spring up on our border.

It would be wonderful, meanwhile, if Harris would get serious about addressing the root causes of our southern neighbors’ problems. Alas, as she’s nowhere to be found these days, she has no interest — and no plan.

Just like the entire Biden administration.
