Lawrence accepts the blame

- By RYAN DUNLEAVY

Dexter Lawrence took almost all the blame for the Giants’ latest loss.

He saved a little for the possibility of a blown call.

When Washington missed a 48-yard field goal as time expired Thursday, the Giants launched into celebration. But Lawrence was penalized for being offsides, giving Washington a second chance that was converted into a 30-29 win and devastation for the Giants.

“That’s on me,” Lawrence said. “I’ve got to be more disciplined at the end of the game like that in a critical situation. That’s why I’m on the field. It was unfortunate to have it happen then — and he missed it — but I’ve just got to do better.”

If Lawrence did jump the snap, it was by a millisecond. Slow-motion replays leave open the possibility that he just perfectly timed his first step to the movement of the ball as the Giants tried to block the kick.

“I’m supposed to move when the ball moves,” Lawrence said. “Obviously, I gave it to the ref to make a decision to think that I moved before the ball moved. My job is to get off and attack whoever is in front of me.”

Was it the right call?

“My opinion doesn’t matter right now,” Lawrence said. “We lost the game and the refs called what they called. So, we’ve just got to move on, shake it off and get ready for next week.”

➤ Darius Slayton had a slightly overthrown would-be touchdown catch slip through his fingertips in the fourth quarter, when no defender was within 15 yards of the goal line. Playing only 39 of 69 offensive snaps, Slayton caught a 33-yard touchdown pass earlier, but the lost 43-yarder would’ve given the Giants a 29-20 lead.

“It’s a play that I 100 percent expect to make,” Slayton said. “I tried to run it down. I should have ran it down. I’ve run down a lot of balls in my life.”

➤ Offensive lineman Nick Gates underwent surgery Friday in Virginia on the lower left leg fracture that ended his season.

Gates told his agent, Jon Perzley, that he “snapped that s- -t in half,” according to Instagram.
