MLB: Bosox extend wild-card lead

Xander Bogaerts homered and drove in four runs, carrying the Red Sox, who own the top AL wild-card spot, past the Orioles 9-3 on Saturday in Boston for their fourth straight win. The Red Sox moved to 1 ¹/2 games ahead of the Yankees.

In St. Louis, Tyler O’Neill hit a goahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Cardinals came back to beat the Padres, 3-2, after San Diego stars Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. had a dugout dustup.

Machado shouted and cursed at Tatis during a dugout tirade in the fifth, telling the young star “it’s not about you” and “you go play baseball” after Tatis struck out looking in the inning. Tatis reacted angrily to the call by plate umpire Phil Cuzzi.

In Toronto, Marcus Semien became the fifth second baseman to hit 40 home runs in a season, and the Blue Jays moved back into a playoff position by beating the Twins 6-2.

In Cincinnati, Max Scherzer pitched seven shutout innings for the Dodgers, who kept up their push in the NL West with a 5-1 victory over the Reds.

Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna will have his disciplina­ry administra­tive leave — a result of charges of battery and aggravated assault by strangulat­ion against his wife — extended another week, per reports.

White Sox pitcher Mike Wright was suspended for three games and manager Tony La Russa for one by MLB, which concluded Wright intentiona­lly threw at the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani on Thursday. Wright appealed, while La Russa sat out Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Texas.

NFL: Saints COVID outbreak grows

Two more Saints coaches are slated to miss Sunday’s game against the Panthers due to COVID-19 protocols, raising the total to eight expected to miss the contest in Charlotte, N.C. Assistant head coach/defensive line Ryan Nielsen and pass rush specialist Brian Young will not be with the team.

Browns safety Ronnie Harrison was fined $12,128 by the NFL for unsportsma­nlike conduct after he shoved Kansas City assistant coach Greg Lewis during a skirmish in last week’s season opener. Lewis first pushed Harrison, who retaliated with a hard, onehanded shot to the coach’s neck area, tilting his headset. Lewis was not fined.

Packers defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery won’t be with the team for its Monday night home opener with the Lions due to COVID-19 protocols. His responsibi­lities will be divided among three coaches.

The Raiders placed backup quarterbac­k Marcus Mariota on injured reserve Saturday after he hurt his quadriceps on his only snap in the season opener.

ETC.: NYCFC top Cincinnati

Keaton Parks and Valentin Castellano­s each scored to help New York City FC win, 2-1, at FC Cincinnati. Castellano­s netted his 12th goal of the season when he converted from the penalty spot to give NYCFC (11-8-5) a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute as they snapped a three-game winless streak.

• In Napa, Calif., Jim Knous shot a 7-under 65 for a share of the lead with Maverick McNealy after three rounds in the Fortinet Championsh­ip. Phil Mickelson (67) is four strokes back.
