Sherman’s suitors include Buccaneers

The Super Bowl champion Buccaneers are reportedly one of multiple teams to show interest in Richard Sherman, the five-time Pro Bowl cornerback who is facing several charges stemming from a July arrest.

NFL.com reported Sunday that Tampa Bay has “touched base” with the 33-year-old Sherman, after starting cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting dislocated his elbow. The 49ers, for whom Sherman played for parts of the last three seasons, have also expressed interest in bringing the California native back later in the season.

Despite all the interest in him early on in his free agency, Sherman, who serves as his own agent, wasn’t able to get any teams to meet his asking price.

After putting on weight while rehabbing from an Achilles tear in 2017, when he was with the Seahawks, Sherman has reportedly dropped 15 pounds and expects to be on the field in 2021. Seattle has also been open about its discussions with Sherman about a possible reunion, per NFL.com.

Sherman is still in the midst of a legal battle after he was arrested on five misdemeanor charges — including driving under the influence and seconddegree criminal trespass — after he crashed his SUV in a construction zone. He also tried to force his way into a family member’s home.

The arrest was initially labeled as a domestic violence incident — video footage showed Sherman attempt to break into his father-in-law’s home and Sherman’s wife, Ashley Moss, called 911 — but police ruled that Sherman didn’t physically assault anyone. Sherman ultimately pled not guilty to all charges and has been doing magnetic therapy, as well as speaking to a therapist, NFL.com reported. The NFL is still reviewing Sherman’s legal situation.

Over 10 seasons with the Seahawks and 49ers, Sherman has 36 career interceptions and 115 passes defended. Sherman helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl XLVIII and then make a return to the championship game the following year.

After signing with San Francisco in 2018, Sherman helped the 49er reach the Super Bowl in 2019. He was limited to just five games in 2020 due to a calf injury related to his Achilles issue.
