‘CRAZY’ COP DUO INJURED
On-duty fireworks fiasco
Two NYPD cops were maimed early Monday — including one whose hand was almost completely blown off — when they allegedly set off fireworks in a Citi Field parking lot while on duty, The Post has learned.
One of the officers is believed to have brought the pyrotechnics along on his shift and was playing with them just before 3:45 a.m. when the blast left him and the other male cop with serious injuries, sources said.
One cop lost a finger, while the second suffered severe injuries to his right hand and right eye, sources said, adding that the second officer may lose an eye.
A photo obtained by The Post showed one of the officer’s hands missing several fingers and the palm of his hand reduced to just bone and tissue.
The cops, whose names weren’t immediately made public, were on overnight detail at a parking lot on Northern Boulevard near the World’s Fair Marina, where the NYPD parks police cruisers for patrols at Citi Field, the New York Mets’ stadium, according to police sources.
The injured officers were separately taken to Elmhurst Hospital and Bellevue Hospital, cops said.
Two other cops who were working the same detail but weren’t playing with the pyrotechnics were grilled on Monday by Internal Affairs about the gruesome incident, sources said. They were treated for tinnitus, police said.
One police source slammed the on-duty activity as “unreal.”
“These guys are crazy,” the source said.
A police spokesman did not respond to specific questions about the incident or on any of the officers’ statuses, saying only that it “is currently under investigation.”
“The cause of these injuries and circumstances surrounding this incident are part of an active and ongoing investigation,” the spokesman later added.
A source with knowledge of the incident told The Post: “For that type of injury, you had to be there at ignition . . . You don’t stumble upon that.”
A spokesperson initially told The Post that the explosion happened at Fresh Meadows Park.
The Police Benevolent Association, the officers’ union, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Illegal fireworks in have been a longstanding issue for New York City residents.
In response to widespread 311 complaints, the NYPD launched a crackdown on the banned explosives over the summer.
