Rose exits with sore ankle, says ‘it’s nothing serious’

- By MARC BERMAN KNICKS NOTES

WASHINGTON — Derrick Rose sat out the fourth quarter of the Knicks’ 117-99 preseason win over the Wizards on Saturday night with a sore ankle, but the backup point guard said it’s not serious and perhaps was due to the tough training camp head coach Tom Thibodeau has run.

Throughout the fourth quarter, Rose flexed his foot and talked to trainers, before leaving for the locker room with one minute remaining.

“It’s nothing serious at all, but if I kept playing I probably would’ve made it worse,’’ Rose said. “I think I probably did it myself. It’s the second game — all this is new, moving around, Thibs training camps are different. I just have to take my time. I’m getting older. I tweaked it but didn’t twist it all the way. Thibs understood [when I took myself out].’’

Rose scored 15 points in 19 minutes and made all three of his 3-pointers on a night when the Knicks knocked down 24 of them.

➤ It turns out center Nerlens Noel didn’t sit out the Knicks’ preseason opener just for rest.

Noel missed the game Tuesday against the Pacers because of a bum right knee. He was out again when the Knicks beat the Wizards on Saturday in their second preseason game because of rightknee soreness.

Before the game against Indiana, Thibodeau said Noel wouldn’t play because he wanted to take a closer look at rookie center Jericho Sims. The Texas product had eight points and six rebounds that night, then scored seven points and hauled in 13 rebounds in 26 minutes of action against the Wizards.

➤ Knicks legend and Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing visited the shootaround, met with some players and gave a brief talk. Then Ewing took the court for practice with his Hoyas.

“I wish them luck,’’ Ewing said.

Thibodeau coached Ewing as an assistant and was on the same staff in Houston.

➤ The Westchester Knicks will play their home games in Bridgeport, Conn., because their White Plains facility is still being used for COVID-19 vaccinations and testing.
