Toney sorry for dustup in Dallas

- By RYAN DUNLEAVY

Kadarius Toney’s fight was applauded. His punch was condemned.

The Giants rookie receiver is likely to be fined but not suspended, as first reported by NFL Network, after he was ejected Sunday for throwing a punch at Cowboys defensive back Damonte Kazee. The standard fine for fighting is about $36,000, which equates to almost a full game’s pay ($38,823) on Toney’s $660,000 base salary.

“It was just a one-time thing,” Toney said. “I’m a rookie making early mistakes.”

Here’s a quick opportunity for Toney to show growth: The Giants next face the Rams. One year ago, then-Giants receiver Golden Tate and Rams cornerback/trash-talker extraordinaire Jalen Ramsey started a postgame brawl over an intra-family squabble.

“All I’ve got to do is really show by my actions,” Toney said. “We’ve got a few opponents coming up that are ‘rowdy,’ I guess you could say. It’s not about what they do, but how I react — and I know how to react from now on.”

Toney, whose social media accounts created a playing-time controversy earlier this season, apologized to the Giants organization on Twitter.

“I felt like I needed to apologize to mainly everyone because as far as little kids looking up to me and stuff like that, it’s not the example I want to set for them,” Toney said. “I feel like everybody makes mistakes, but we always have to be accountable for our emotions, and our actions also.”

The ejection soured an incredible individual performance by Toney, who had 10 catches for 189 yards (86 after the catch) in his fifth career game.

“It really felt special really just going out there,” Toney said. “We worked on the plays over and over throughout the week, and it just felt good to execute at a high level.”

Giants coach Joe Judge scolded Toney after his ejection — pointing him back to the locker room — and later addressed it further with his first-round pick and the rest of the team.

“That’s something we’re not going to condone,” Judge said.
