Rookie Grimes making strong impression

- By MARC BERMAN

There isn’t much rookie Quentin Grimes has done wrong since the Knicks drafted the University of Houston shooting guard with the No. 25-overall pick in late July.

After a slow start, Grimes came on like gangbusters in the summer league in Las Vegas. In his 1 minute 46 seconds of action in Saturday’s blowout win over Washington, Grimes stepped up to knock down two 3-pointers.

The 6-foot-5 Grimes is a two-way player — right up

Tom Thibodeau’s alley. The reigning NBA Coach of the Year has noted on more than one occasion Grimes launched more than 800 3-pointers during his college career — a perfect fit for the Knicks’ new 3-ball philosophy.

Yet the 21-year-old Houston native is still wearing the green jersey in practice. The Knicks have three color schemes in Tarrytown — blue for the starters, gray for the backups and green for the rookies/players out of the rotation.

The Knicks are a deep team at all positions — and Grimes knows the wait is on.

“Thibs preaches anytime you get the opportunity, you got to be ready for it,’’ Grimes said. “It’s 82 games. Be ready. You never know. It might be the second game of the season. You want to be prepared whenever the opportunity comes your way, you have to make the most of it.’’

Grimes and rookie point guard Miles McBride, selected No. 36, are in the same boat. In the first two preseason games, McBride was relegated to late fourthquarter action.

Yet when asked what he likes most about Grimes, Thibodeau was ebullient.

“Everything,’’ Thibodeau said. “He and Miles, they are going to be good players. It started in the summer league, fall workout and then training camp. When it comes to get in there, get the job done. That’s what I love about both guys. Quentin went in, Miles went in right at the end of the game. Both of them played really well.”

Nerlens Noel (knee) and Derrick Rose (ankle) are expected to play in the third preseason game

Wednesday against the Pistons. Noel has missed the first two with a sore right knee. Rose came out for the fourth quarter after tweaking his ankle. Both players practiced in full Monday.

“I think they’re in a good place,’’ Thibodeau said.

Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is getting closer and Thibodeau wouldn’t completely rule him out for the preseason finale Friday against Washington.
