CAREER COACH

-

You recently wrote an article about Gen Z being coddled and whiny in the workplace. Aren’t you guilty of stereotyping a group of millions of individuals? I have hired many 20-somethings and I find them smart, sharp and highly engaged.

Me too! This generation is super smart and aware. They grew up with more technology and access to global information than any other in history. Yet while I avoid gross generalizations, there are differences in generations — in conduct, perspective and actions. Throughout the history of mankind, people often change with experience at different stages of life. Most people early in their careers have emerged from a relative cocoon-like environment — school and home for the first 20 years of their life — and now they are out on their own. It isn’t as much a criticism as an acknowledgment of the life stage, maturity and experience and the fact that we need to mentor people throughout their careers. This is also an important message for parents of Gen Z kids who need to let them go and learn.

I want to clarify your article concerning a vaccine exemption for vegans. An ethical vegan does not partake in products that are tested on animals, period. I will never get the vaccine because I am an ethical vegan. I don’t expect selfish carnivores who promote the murder of animals to care.

I love animals — it’s like a freaking wild kingdom in our household. I even return spiders attempting to set up residence in our house to the outdoors. For a brief moment there you almost ruined my appetite, but then I remembered that humans have been hunting animals for food since — oh, the beginning of mankind. However, our respective food choices are irrelevant for the purposes of vaccination exemption under the law. Some states like New York are attempting to eliminate the religious exemption for vaccine mandates, so if the court isn’t going to honor a religious exemption they are not going to recognize ethical veganism either. Whether or not you get vaccinated is your choice, but you may not have the law on your side.
