Return of Anti-Gun Units: Adams’ Plan To Fight Crime

-

On Tuesday, a second NYPD officer passed away in the hospital from the shootout last Friday (“Take back NYC!” Jan, 25).

What is worse is that some people are against Mayor Adams’ plan to reinstitute a task force to combat guns on the street.

Crime is out of control throughout the city day and night: shootings, assaults, robberies, etc., targeting innocent people and police officers.

Adams understands the city must change for the better. It will take a few years to take back control of the city by allowing the NYPD to perform its job by arresting lawbreakers of all kinds, who must then be prosecuted.

Adams doesn’t need to reinvent an anti-crime plan. All he needs to do is pull out Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s anti-crime playbook that resulted in New York City becoming the safest big city in the country.

Frankly, that plan should have been ready to go on Jan. 1, when Adams took his oath of office.

THE ISSUE: Mayor Adams’ unveiling of his anti-crime plan after a shootout last week killed two police officers.

Not an auspicious beginning, Mr. Mayor. Carole Campolo East Hampton I don’t know how many times Adams was involved with gun arrests during his career in the NYPD, but it takes special people in law enforcement to accomplish it — like the anti-crime units that politicians and police officials disbanded.

Now the mayor is saying he is going to bring some units back, but they will wear police identification and body cameras as they attempt to take guns off the street.

It’s the element of surprise that makes these arrests possible. If you can’t surprise the perps in the street, you create a situation that could go bad.

If you want these guns off the street, let these units do their jobs like they did before. Leave politics out of it, and worry more about the citizens of New York City.

I’m a retired NYPD detective and worked anticrime; in my opinion, these units produced the best, most hardworking officers in the NYPD.

People shoot the guns, and people push other people onto subway tracks. Blaming guns for gun violence or making a case that we need barriers on subway platforms for protection are just excuses.

Lock up those carrying guns, and place the mentally disabled away until you can ensure they won’t hurt anyone.

Start protecting innocent people from these dangerous individuals, regardless of their unfortunate situation.
