NHL: Islanders cut down by Sabres

The Islanders couldn’t contain the Sabres’ Tage Thompson as he scored his team-leading 37th goal during a three-goal, second-period surge Saturday, and they lost 5-3 in Buffalo in a game between two non-playoff teams.

Mathew Barzal scored in the opening period along with Dobson and Kieffer Bellows providing the Islanders brief hope by scoring goals 1:37 apart to cut Buffalo’s lead to 4-3 with 9:38 remaining.

● In Newark, Ilya Sorokin stopped 30 shots, rookie Seth Jarvis scored with 3:21 left in overtime and the Hurricanes rallied from a late two-goal deficit to beat the Devils 3-2 at Prudential Center. Yegor Sharangovi­ch and Nico Hischier had staked the Devils to a 2-0 lead.

● In Sunrise, Fla, Brandon Montour scored 2:26 into overtime and the NHLleading Panthers extended their winning streak to a franchise-record 13 games by beating the Maple Leafs 3-2.

● In Tampa, Fla, Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov scored first-period power-play goals and the Lightning defeated the Predators 6-2.

MLB: Cubs blast Pirates

Alfonso Rivas had three hits and five RBIs, and the Cubs stopped a four-game slide by pounding the Pirates 21-0 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Cubs finished with 23 hits in their most lopsided shutout win dating to at least 1901.

● In St. Petersburg, Fla., Kevin Kiermaier capped Tampa Bay’s three-run 10th inning with a game-ending homer, and the Rays beat the Red Sox 3-2 after losing their bid for a combined no-hitter in the top half of the final frame.

● In Houston, minutes after getting a rousing ovation from the home crowd, George Springer homered in his first game against the Astros, his former team, to spark the Blue Jays to a 3-2 win. Santiago Espinal broke a 2-all tie with a homer run in the seventh inning for the Blue Jays.

● In Atlanta, pinch-hitter Garrett Cooper’s bases-loaded, go-ahead single in the seventh drove in two runs and the Marlins beat the Braves 9-7. Miami rallied by scoring three runs in the seventh inning.

● In Philadelph­ia, Willy Adames stole home for the go-ahead run and Adrian Houser tossed six solid innings to lead the Brewers to a 5-3 win over the Phillies.

● In Washington, Alex Wood pitched five effective innings and the Giants’ bullpen closed it out for a 5-2 victory over the Nationals.

GOLF: Cantlay, Schauffele take lead Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele played the back nine in 8-under 28 and shot a 12-under 60 in best-ball play to shatter the Zurich Classic three-round record at 29 under and stretch their lead to five strokes in Avondale, La.

● In Irving, Texas, Steven Alker moved into position for his second straight PGA Tour Champions victory, shooting a 5-under 66 in windy conditions to take a twostroke lead in the ClubCorp Classic.

● In Los Angeles, Nasa Hataoka took advantage of Jin Young Ko’s late meltdown to take a four-stroke lead into the final round of the DIO Implant LA Open.
