Hateful trip: How the racist shooting rampage in a Buffalo supermarket unfolded
1
Accused shooter Payton Gendron, 18, drives more than 3 hours from his home in tiny Conklin, N.Y., just outside Binghamton, to Buffalo.
2 The white teen pulls into the Tops Friendly Market parking lot at 1275 Jefferson Ave., in a predominantly black neighborhood, around 2:30 p.m. “He was very heavily armed. He had tactical gear on. He had a tactical helmet on,” Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. Ready with a camera to livestream his next steps, authorities say Gramaglia -- who had a semiautomatic rifle, a hunting rifle and a shotgun -- gets out of the vehicle, and opens fire. 3
The N-word was scrawled on the semiautomatic weapon in white paint, along with the number 14, signifying a 14-word statement popular with white supremacists, The Buffalo News reported. The madman allegedly kills three people in the Tops parking lot, and leaves a fourth person hurt, the police commissioner said.
4 Genron makes his way into the store, where he encountered security guard Aaron Salter, Jr., a retired Buffalo cop. The veteran officer opens fire, striking the attacker, who is protected by body armor. The shooter then fires, killing Salter, the commissioner said.
5 Gendron allegedly makes his way through the store, killing seven and wounding two more.
6 Buffalo police arrive on the scene. Two patrol officers confront the shooter in the store’s vestibule, where he put his gun to his own neck before the cops convince him to surrender, Gramaglia said.
7 Gendron is arrested and taken to jail.
