NHL: Avs give Georgiev 3-year deal

Alexander Georgiev, traded by the Rangers on Thursday for third- and a fifth-round picks this year and a third-rounder in 2023, signed a three-year deal with the Avalanche on Sunday, completing the final step toward making him the defending Stanley Cup champions’ starting goalie in their title defense.

Georgiev’s contract is worth $10.2 million and carries an annual salary cap hit of $3.4 million. He replaces Cup winner Darcy Kuemper and is expected to play in tandem with veteran backup Pavel Francouz next season.

All-Star forward Adrian Kempe has agreed to a four-year, $22 million contract extension with the Kings.

MLB: Braves top Nationals in 12

Austin Riley hit a tying home run in the eighth inning and a winning single in the 12th, lifting the surging Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Nationals on Sunday in Atlanta.

Ted Nichols-Payne, the Rangers’ radio network engineer for nearly 30 years, collapsed in the parking lot of Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas before Sunday’s game against the Twins and died at a local hospital. He was 56.

Winless for more than two years, Xander Schauffele picked up his fourth victory in the last 12 months Sunday when he overcame a rough patch in the middle of his round with two key birdies and a par save for an even-par 70 to win the Scottish Open, the first time the PGA Tour co-sanctioned a European tour event, in North Berwick.

Schauffele finished at 7-under 273, one shot ahead of Kurt Kitayama (66).

MLS: Rooney tapped to coach DC

Wayne Rooney has agreed to coach D.C. United, a person with knowledge of the move told the AP.

The longtime English soccer star played for the MLS club in 2018 and 2019. Once visa paperwork is complete, Rooney is set to replace interim coach Chad Ashton, who replaced Hernan Losada earlier this season.

ETC.: Gallinari, Celts strike deal

Danilo Gallinari , recently waived by the Spurs after an offseason trade from Atlanta, will sign a two-year, $13.3 million deal with the Celtics, ESPN reported, citing his agent.
