MLB: Kershaw exits Dodgers win

Clayton Kershaw left his start with low back pain, but behind homers by Mookie Betts and Trea Turner, the Dodgers beat the Giants, 5-3, in San Francisco to complete a four-game sweep. Kershaw appeared to feel discomfort while he was warming up before the bottom of the fifth inning.

Before exiting, Kershaw was taken deep by J.D. Davis as the former Met hit his first home run for the Giants, a two-run blast to right in the second inning.

● In Philadelph­ia, Noah Syndergaar­d won his Phillies debut despite giving up four runs in a rain-shortened, five-inning game, 5-4 over the Nationals. Earlier in the day, Philadelph­ia released former Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius.

● Whit Merrifield, acquired via a deadline-day trade from the Royals this week, said he now is vaccinated against COVID-19 and will be cleared to play when the Blue Jays return to Canada.

● The Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera, who joined the 3,000-hit/500-homer club earlier

in the year, says he may end his likely Hall of Fame career at the end of this season.

GOLF: Huh shoots 61 at Sedgefield John Huh holed a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th hole at Sedgefield in Greensboro, N.C., to finish with a 9-under 61 and a two-shot lead over Sungjae Im in the Wyndham Championsh­ip, the final tournament of the PGA Tour regular season.

● In Muirfield, Scotland, Jessica Korda recovered from an early bogey to shoot a 5-under 66 in the first round at the Women’s British Open, putting her one shot behind leader Hinako Shibuno.
