BORED OF THE RINGS

Director eyed hypnosis to view his films anew

- By BROOKE STEINBERG

Peter Jackson considered going to great lengths to forget everything about “The Lord of the Rings.”

The director told The Hollywood Reporter that he “seriously considered” using hypnosis to forget all his work on the film series.

But his reasoning behind wanting to erase his memories wasn’t because of any poor experiences — he simply wanted to experience the movies as a regular fan.

“When we did the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies, I always felt I was the unlucky person who never got to see as a coming-out-of-the-blue film,” said Jackson, 60, who directed the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy (2001-2003) as well the later “Hobbit” trilogy (2012-2014).

“By the time there were screenings, I was immersed in it for five or six years. It was such a loss for me not to be able to see them like everyone else. I actually did seriously consider going to some hypnotherapy guy to hypnotize me to make me forget about the films and the work I had done over the last six or seven years so I could sit and enjoy them.”

While Jackson (inset) didn’t follow through with the hypnosis, he said he spoke to Britmentalist ish Derren Brown, who thought he could make the memories disappear.

Given all the time and effort Jackson has put into the franchise, it seems unlikely he’ll see his movies as a firsttime viewer.

Still,

Jackson added that he will be able to enjoy Amazon’s new series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” as a fan, considering he has no connecZealand tion to the production.

The New director said that Amazon initially asked him to be involved and offered to send him scripts, but that they never followed up on the invitation.

“The Rings of Power” takes place 1,000 years beevents fore the of “The Lord of the Rings.” The show premieres on Prime Video Sept. 2.
