Big Blue eyeing Jeudy

- By MARK W. SANCHEZ — Additional reporting by Ryan Dunleavy

If the Giants ever needed a healthy, contributing, big-time receiver, that time is now.

Sterling Shepard is out for the season with a torn ACL. Their leader in receiving yards, Richie James, is a 2018 seventh-round pick. And Kadarius Toney is off the team, shipped to the Chiefs on Thursday.

In return, the Giants received conditional third-round and fifthround picks that could be moved again if they try to add a big piece — and maybe replace one former first-round pick with another.

There is a feeling around the league that the Giants could be adding draft capital to make sure they can compete in the sweepstakes if the Broncos make receiver Jerry Jeudy available.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll coached Jeudy, the 15th-overall pick in 2020, in his one year as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. The Broncos are 2-5, and the trade deadline is Tuesday.

If they do not add externally, maybe the Giants will add internally. If Kenny Golladay can return to health, playing time on a contender would await him.

“I want to be a part of it big time,” Golladay, a sixth-year pro and second-year Giant, said Thursday after Toney was dealt. “I’m trying everything to get back out there. I’ve never even been a part of a team that’s gone 6-1. I’m trying to do everything to get back out there.”

Golladay has not played since the Week 4 win over the Bears, during which he suffered an MCL sprain. He did not practice Thursday and pointed to possibly returning after the Week 9 bye, following which he hopes he can be a contributor.

“Getting there,” Golladay said about his knee. “Just steady, trying to stack good days on one another. I feel a lot better, though.”

If the Giants ever needed a $72 million receiver, that time is now. Before the injury, Golladay was a nonfactor for four games, in which he only caught two passes.

Because of the lack of production and after his disappointing first year with the Giants, Golladay could find his way to the trading block, too — a possibility he acknowledged, though he said his focus is on the field.

Golladay never made the playoffs with the Lions and has missed most of the good times with this season’s Giants.
