Smith’s time in Queens coming to disappointing end

- By DAN MARTIN

Dom Smith has gone from Mets first-round draft pick, to intriguing prospect, to disappointment.

And now his time with the Mets is coming to an end.

The team planned to non-tender him before the Friday night deadline, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.

Smith, 27, will be a free agent after consecutive rough seasons in Queens.

It has been quite a downfall for Smith, who was the Mets’ firstround pick (11th overall) in 2013, the same draft in which Aaron Judge went to the Yankees at No. 32.

Smith made his MLB debut at 22 and showed signs of developing into a threat at the plate in 2019, when he had an OPS of .891 in 197 plate appearances.

He was even better in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, with an OPS of .993 in 50 games — good enough to finish 13th in the NL MVP voting.

But Smith failed to follow up those years with much success.

With Pete Alonso at first base, Smith didn’t have a natural position and didn’t hit well enough as a DH.

A partially torn labrum in his shoulder impacted Smith’s effectiveness in 2021, when he was among the biggest disappointments on the team, as his power plummeted.

Things only got worse this past season. He opened the year platooning at DH with J.D. Davis and was eventually demoted to Triple-A Syracuse.

Smith had two years of arbitration left and the decision to move on from him seemed likely when the Mets opted to pick up fellow lefty-swinging Daniel Vogelbach’s $1.5 million option.

Among the teams that may be interested in signing Smith are the Rays and Royals, according to The Post’s Mike Puma. He is still young, hits left-handed and has shown flashes before.

The first base market is not particularly robust, especially after Anthony Rizzo signed to stay with the Yankees.

Joining Smith on the free agent market are Jose Abreu, Josh Bell, Yuli Gurriel and Trey Mancini, with the Astros and Padres perhaps looking for additions at the position, as well.

Per The Post’s Joel Sherman, the Mets planned to tender their other arbitration-eligible players: Pete Alonso, Luis Guillorme, Joey Lucchesi, Jeff McNeil, Tomas Nido and Drew Smith.
