AUSSIE OPEN: Linette in quarters
Magda Linette came from two breaks down in the first set en route to beating No. 4 Caroline Garcia 7-6 (3), 6-4 on Monday in Melbourne to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
She will face Karolina Pliskova, who defeated Zhang Shuai 6-0, 6-4 in another fourth-round match on Monday.
Fifth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka defeated Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-2 in Melbourne to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time. Sabalenka faces Donna Vekic, who defeated Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
NCAA: Temple tops No. 1 Houston
Damian Dunn scored 16 points and made the go-ahead free throw, Kur Jongkuch blocked Houston’s go-ahead attempt in the final seconds and Temple held on to defeat the top-ranked Cougars 56-55 on Sunday in Houston.
The Owls (12-9, 6-2 AAC) earned their first win over a No. 1 ranked team since a 77-69 win at No. 1 Cincinnati on Feb. 20, 2000.
In Staten Island, Rob Taylor II and Rahmir Moore scored 19 points apiece to lead Wagner to a 68-58 win over Sacred Heart.
In Lawrenceville, N.J., Samir Stewart and Marques Watson scored 12 points apiece, but it wasn’t enough as Manhattan fell at Rider, 67-65.
In Brooklyn, Trey Quartlebaum posted 17 points in a losing effort as St. Francis Brooklyn fell to Merrimack, 63-55.
In Jersey City, Jaylen Murray’s 16 points weren’t enough as Saint Peter’s fell to visiting Niagara, 59-57.
GOLF: Rahm takes American Express
Jon Rahm shot a 4-under 68 and outlasted rookie Davis Thompson down the final stretch to win The American Express on Sunday in La Quinta, Calif.
Rahm, who topped Thompson by one stroke after beginning the final round tied, captured his second title in his past two starts.
With a 2-under-par 70 in the final round, Brooke Henderson completed a wire-to-wire victory at the LPGA’s seasonopening Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Fla. Henderson finished four strokes better than Maja Stark and Charley Hull.
NHL: Vancouver fires Boudreau
Bruce Boudreau has been fired as coach of the Canucks, who are again on track to miss the playoffs with another underachieving season. Rick Tocchet was hired as Boudreau’s replacement for a team that has lost 28 of 46 games this season.
In Boston, defensemen Hampus Lindholm and Charlie McAvoy scored highlight-reel goals, Linus Ullmark stopped 17 shots and the NHL-leading Bruins beat the Sharks 4-0.
In Tempe, Ariz., Clayton Keller had his second hat trick of the season and the Coyotes beat the Golden Knights 4-1, their second victory in the last 13 games.
NBA: OKC snaps Nuggets’ streak
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander banked in a decisive 8-foot jumper with 9.2 seconds remaining and finished with 34 points as the visiting Thunder snapped Denver’s league-leading nine-game win streak and beat the Nuggets, 101-99. Denver was without Nikola Jokic.
In Portland, Ore., LeBron James had 37 points and 11 rebounds, and the Lakers rallied to beat the Trail Blazers, 121-112.
In Phoenix, Chris Paul had 22 points and 11 assists in his return after missing seven games with a hip injury, leading the Suns over Memphis, 112-110.
