NHL: Devils beat Capitals in SO

Timo Meier scored the shootout winner to help the Devils earn a 3-2 victory over the Capitals Thursday night in Washington to keep pace in the Metropolit­an Division playoff race.

Erik Haula and Dawson Mercer scored 37 seconds apart in the second period for the Devils’ goals in regulation. Akira Schmid was a perfect 4 of 4 in the shootout after making 20 saves in regulation and overtime.

● The Oilers escaped a scare when NHL scoring leader Connor McDavid limped off the ice late in a 3-2 win over the Bruins in Boston, minutes after Darnell Nurse scored the tiebreakin­g goal with 4:49 remaining. McDavid returned to the ice minutes after suffering a knee-on-knee collision with teammate Derek Ryan.

● In Tampa, Fla., Alex Martinez scored 3:09 into overtime to give the Golden Knights a 4-3 victory over the Lightning.

● In Buffalo, Radek Faksa scored twice and the Central Division-leading Dallas Stars enjoyed their best offensive output in 14 years in a 10-4 rout over the Sabres.

NFL: Bengals’ Mixon not a suspect

Bengals running back Joe Mixon is not a suspect in this week’s shooting incident at his home, according to police records. Authoritie­s in Hamilton County (Ohio) released an incident report Thursday regarding the events of Monday night, when a child was shot in the foot.

TMZ Sports reported that Shalonda Mixon, sister of Joe Mixon, was named a suspect in the shooting incident at the Bengals star’s home, per a new police document TMZ obtained.

● The 49ers added a league-high seven compensato­ry picks in next month’s NFL draft, giving them 11 total selections. The NFL awarded 37 compensato­ry picks to 16 teams on Thursday for the April 27-29 draft in Kansas City, Missouri.

● The Texans lost their pick in the fifth round of this year’s draft and must pay a $175,000 fine for a salary cap reporting violation involving Deshaun Watson, the NFL announced Thursday.

● Wide receiver Keenan Allen saved the Chargers $8.9 million in cap space by agreeing to a restructur­ed contract as Los Angeles scrambles to shed money and comply with the 2023 salary cap

NBA: Grizzlies top Warriors

Tyus Jones had 22 points and 11 assists, Jaren Jackson Jr. added 21 points and nine rebounds and the Grizzlies beat the Warriors 131-110 in Memphis. Stephen Curry had 29 points for Golden State.

● Raptors guard Fred VanVleet began his profanity-filled tirade on Wednesday by saying, “I’ll take a fine, I don’t really care.” The NBA obliged a day later, handing him a $30,000 fine for “public criticism of the officiatin­g.”

MLB: Harper hopeful for return

Phillies star Bryce Harper thinks he could be ready as soon as the All-Star break as he recovers from offseason Tommy John surgery. The two-time National League MVP said Thursday the team has solidified mid-July as the potential target date for Harper to return.

● Xander Bogaerts had three hits, including a double and a solo homer, as the Netherland­s knocked off Panama 3-1 in the World Baseball Classic in Taiwan.

● Robbie Glendinnin­g hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning as Australia held on to beat South Korea in the opener of Pool B at Tokyo.
