Quisenbery is right on Q in Fordham A-10 win

Darius Quisenberr­y had 22 points in Fordham’s 69-61 win against La Salle on Thursday night in the quarterfin­als of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at Barclays Center.

Quisenberr­y also contribute­d six rebounds for the Rams (25-7). Khalid Moore scored 20 points while shooting 6-for-14 (2-for-5 from 3-point range) and added 11 rebounds. Will Richardson was 4 of 7 shooting (2-for-4 from distance) to finish with 10 points.

The Rams will face Dayton, a 60-54 winner over Saint Joseph’s, in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

In Thursday’s other quarterfin­als, top-seeded VCU beat Davidson 71-53, and Saint Louis pounded George Mason 82-54.

Big Ten second round Rutgers 62, Michigan 60

In Chicago, Cam Spencer and Derek Simpson scored 23 of their combined 31 points in the second half.

Spencer scored 18 and Simpson 13 for the ninth-seeded Scarlet Knights (19-13), who will play topseed Purdue in the quarterfin­als Friday.

Hunter Dickinson scored 24 points for eighth-seeded Michigan (17-15), which had just one secondhalf field goal until the final minute.Trailing by three at halftime, Rutgers opened the second half on a 12-3 run and midway through scored 12 straight points to lead by 13 with just under six minutes remaining. The lead grew to 16 with two minutes to go.

In other second-round games, 13th-seeded Ohio State won its second straight, upsetting fifth-seeded Iowa 73-69, to set up a game with fourth-seeded Michigan State; 10thseeded Penn State took down seventh-seeded Illinois 79-76 to earn a date with second-seeded Northweste­rn; and sixth-seeded Maryland routed 14th-seeded Minnesota 70-54 to set up a game with thirdseede­d Indiana.

ACC quarterfin­als Virginia 68, N. Carolina 59

Jayden Gardner had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 13 Virginia dealt a damaging blow to North Carolina’s already shaky NCAA Tournament hopes.

This never looked anything like the team that made a magical run to last year’s national championsh­ip game, then started the year with four starters back to earn a No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press preseason poll. Now the Tar Heels appear headed toward becoming the first AP preseason No. 1 to miss the tournament since its expansion to 64 teams in 1985.

Virginia will next face Clemson, which easily handled N.C. State, 80-54.

In Friday’s other semifinal, redhot Duke, which pounded Pitt 96-69, will face top-seeded Miami, which held off Wake Forest 74-72.

SEC second round Tennessee 70, Mississipp­i 55

In Nashville, Tenn., Josiah-Jordan James had game-highs of 20 points and seven rebounds, leading the No. 17 Volunteers (23-9) into a quarterfin­al matchup with Missouri.

In other second-round games, Mississipp­i State beat Florida 69-68 in overtime behind 28 points from Tolu Smith to set up a matchup with top-seeded Alabama; Arkansas nipped Auburn 76-73 to advance to face second-seeded Texas A&M; and Vanderbilt handled LSU 77-68 to move into a game against thirdseede­d Kentucky.

Big 12 quarterfin­als Iowa St. 78, Baylor 72

In Kansas City. Mo., Gabe Kalscheur hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points, helping the Cyclones (19-12) overcome a spectacula­r 28-point performanc­e from forward Jalen Bridges for the No. 10 Bears (22-10) in the quarterfin­als.

The Cyclones advance to face top-seeded Kansas, which handled West Virginia 75-61.

In the other semifinal, Texas, which beat Oklahoma State 61-47, will take on TCU, which beat Kansas State 80-67.

MAAC quarterfin­als Marist 75, Quinnipiac 59

In Atlantic City, Patrick Gardner scored 22 points and 11thseeded Marist pulled off its second straight upset, beating No. 3 seed Quinnipiac in the quarterfin­al round. Marist will face Saint Peter’s, which won Wednesday, in a Friday semifinal.

In Thursday’s other quarterfin­al, Niagara beat Siena 71-65 to set up a semifinal against topseeded Iona.
