Poland Delivers — Late, Thanks to Joe

-

President Biden’s dithering Ukraine strategy has taken another major hit. Poland will transfer much-needed MiG fighters to Ukraine, announcing the move almost a year to the day after the White House kiboshed the NATO member’s initial plan to do so.

In other words, all Joe accomplished was pointlessly delaying the planes’ arrival, thus hamstringing the Ukrainian forces. The presumable greenlight Washington gave this latest Polish move carries with it all the escalatory risk Biden claims to fear, but none of the benefits swifter action would’ve had.

The worst of both worlds, from a US strategic perspective — and a clear gift to Vladimir Putin, whose strategy, after his initial failure to conquer the country in a few days, is a brutal war of attrition.

Drop more and more bombs on civilian targets, throw more and more troops into the meat-grinder, then hunker down and hope his sheer advantage in numbers of both men and armaments carries the day.

Biden’s policy of delay, in other words, is Putin’s best friend. The Russian despot has also learned that Biden buys his empty nuclear bluster: Mention nukes and the White House goes into possum mode.

The whole MiG affair highlights the larger problem with Biden’s “dribs and drabs” approach. It’s totally reactive to Putin, allowing him to determine the contours of the fight — and leaves the Ukrainians in a bloody, endless limbo while Poland has to lead the charge on tanks and planes.

Putin’s war, no matter the moaning of isolationists and their enablers, poses a real threat to US interests. It’s time Biden acted like it, instead of hoping that keeping his head in the sand will somehow make it all go away.
